Will the big box stores ever do quility work?
 
I see how many people go to the big box stores in just one day and I think if they could ever get professional people to do installs they could corner the market. I was calling around looking for someone to do my seamless gutters, and decided to call the bigbox because everyone else was enjoying Father's Day. I could not get a straight answer. I finally found out they can install gutters but would give absolutely no details. I am thinking to myself, why not have a separate line just for installs and have a quality person answering questions. I am looking to spend about 10,000 dollars on gutters and they can only take my number and have someone call me. Why is it so difficult. Not to mention the water heater they hooked up for me was a complete hack job. For now even an average company has nothing to worry about with the big box stores.

#1 They only have the install salesman there on week days.
I know I would not give any pricing info over the phone until I saw the job.

I've seen some pretty good work done by some of the installers.

I can't figure out why they don't sell roll stock and rent the forming tool. Like the blown in insulation along with the blower. I know I would be a customer.

That sounds like the kid you hire who says "When they pay me more, I'll work harder."

Does anyone know exactly how the big boxes contract their subs.?

I do use them for carpet and granite often in rental or flip properties.

Many years ago, I got to know the granite shop pretty well, and at that time, the big-box was taking 18% off the top. (That shop itself did top quality work... however they no longer do the big-box work)

Carpet is much more confusing. You have to technically buy the pad from the installer (@4.50 for $2.50 pad) but they had that $129 complete house install price (plus some of their padded charges and they did not miss any possible add on).

I have had a storm door and pivot shower door installed by Lowes' contractors, and both were very well done. I think the issue here is consistency.

What makes you think they work for minimum wage ?
They are independent contractors that have an agreement to perform the work.

I know a couple that keep several people busy on the big box work.

It's an interesting business model. They are a middle man, taking a cut, but their volume gets them discounts that still makes the pricing legit. On a case-by-case, you'd rather have the 18% or whatever they take to pay for a more skilled installer or better product, but I don't think their business model works at that level, since they also sell the materials, work in huge quantities, etc.

We had floors installed by them and the work was great.

Back when I first got licensed and long before I had an established customer base I did window and siding installations for a box store for about 3-4 months.

It was a joke, you got x amount per sq on siding, a flat rate per hole on windows etc. No deciding if you wanted the job or not, they'd hand you a work order, load you up, and off you go to a job, site unseen.

Find rot...they won't pay. Sales rep sold the job as 22 sq and it was really 28...sorry about your luck. A few extra bucks for those 8 dormers with only a half a sq. on them each...ya right.

Working for chump change the only way to make any money was to be lightning fast and kiss their azz. Complain and you're gone, turn down a job and you're gone.

I seen a few of the contracts and quickly realized they were selling siding at $1000+ per sq. and I knew the material and labor cost to them was only about $200 per. Of a 20 sq. job I may have got $1200 for doing the work but the sales rep made 2-3 grand for his 2-3 hr. 10 point sales pitch.

That was just my experience and was 25+ years ago but I doubt much has changed.

I bought carpet from lowes. They did a nice job installing it.

I've wondered how badly the contractors are getting screwed with it all. If it's this bad....I feel guilty and will avoid using them.

It's pretty much that way for plumbing- such as a WH.
Here's the rumors I heard from guys I know and my personal inquiries- I never joined their program as I find it insulting as a contractor

Contractor pays for the required pre-hire drug test
Contractor pays for application fees to get on the approved list.
Contractor must respond to calls that day- kind of sucks when your booked.
Code upgrades are not in the original quote- homeowners are not prepared for possible additional costs
You got to work your butt off to make a profit.....

On the good side- I had a chain link fence installed by a box store sub. Came out real nice.
