Why are kids playsets so expensive?

My wife and I started looking at these for the new house. Holy cow they are expensive. Looked at CedarWorks too by mistake....$$$$$$.

So I started thinking of what some of the costs are:

Engineer to come up with plans
Wood (cedar)
Cutting/drilling
Brackets & hardware
Accessories (slides/swings/nets etc.)
Material markup

Is there a substantial cost savings if you buy a set of plans, and purchase the lumber and cut/drill it yourself?

Just wondering about this.

Actually, some of the kits aren't to bad, price wise----the hardware adds up fast.

If you want to build your own, some companies offer hardware kits and plans----

We assembled one for a customer last year---I could not believe the hours that went into assembling it---two men for a day---total of 20 hours---half of the time was spent sorting out the parts and reading the instructions--

Personally ,I would rather make my own---I hate instructions--and kits in general.

I made my own.......I have about $800 just in red wood into this beast....slide was another $600....and then all my time....at least 2 solid weekends.

Those kits are actually pretty good deals....but remember, you will only get about 4-6 years out of it before the kids are spending more time on DS's and Wii.

Over the Thanksgiving weekend I will be removing the last of this...slide is already gone.

When it comes to expense don't forget to figure in the liability issues brought in thanks to the lawyers. Some legit some ridiculous.

I would comb the internet for good suppliers of all the non lumber materials then study exsisting designs to get the juices flowing then build one of my own design. Then, if I had kids, they would be lucky to enjoy it more than I did.

I'll need to look into plans. I was just curious how much of the cost was markup/etc. vs. just materials.

To be perfectly honest.....

My kids have gotten more fun out of cardboard boxes than any other toy,.......

Many moons ago,I bought a hardware kit from Menards--It came with a materials list--rather basic--the kids enjoyed it--then we built a tree house--never did finish that--The swing set is still in the neighborhood--

It get's passed around as the kids grow up----I suggest you build your own--the instructions that the fun out of building---

I enjoy the creative process---besides----if you want to make changes as you go--no one will know ----(As you hide the boards that you cut wrong)

Have fun---Kids are little for so short of a time---enjoy them---

Aaah the swingset. 5 days for a few hours after work. Right now I'm ripping off and rebuilding the second floor of my home, and I'd rather do it again than deal with those instructions for that swingset. Order the hardware and build it yourself. I swapped out a lot of their lumber anyway, just didn't trust some of it.
