Where did you learn your DIY skills?

Where did you learn how to do the things you can do?

I've been reading through several of the threads since I stumbled on the site, and it's amazing to me how much all of you can do.

some from Dad. some just makes sense to me (electrical and mechanical systems). some from school. and of course trial and error.

just be carefull, and remebere how it was, and it realy is amazing what the average person can do. a former housemate of mine with no automotive experince I know of, swapped out her cars radiator with just a couple quick pointers from me. it was mainly that she had the cofidence to actualy try it, because I had her back if she got in over her head. I just make sure I don't do anything that I cant undo unless I'm sure of what I'm doing.

I usually tell people that my unhealthy sense of self confidence is the key to my success.

I learned a lot for working with my dad---He was a typical WW 2 vet--If he wanted something done he did it him self.
I heard him say, more than once,"I'm as smart as that guy,if he can do it so can I."

I read every thing I could lay my hands on about building and woodworking.

I also attached myself to every skilled tradesman that I could--Let me watch and learn.

Shop classes in school--

I worked as a carpenter,plumber,electrician and tile setter--I get bored easily--and I read a lot.

Necessity. Common sense. Anything I couldn't figure out myself, I asked questions.
I was also that kid that tore everything apart to see how it worked.

the confidence to try something isn't what i find holds me back. it's the fear that i won't be able to put it back together later... or worse end up with some catastrophic disaster.

Didn't learn squat from my dad about DIY, alas. I somehow got hooked on watching This Old House, Hometime and others of the PBS vintage. I love figuring out how things are done.

When I finally bought my own house, I felt I knew enough to try things. First project was to install a power vent in the roof. Totally freaked about putting a large hole in a perfectly waterproof roof... -- but I did it, and did it right! Huge confidence boost, and kept me going to many bigger and better projects thru the years.

Gotta go out there and try it/DO it. Research, learn, do.

Yup - that happens. And it's how you learn

- I now photograph EVERYTHING before and during disassembly
- and occasionally I have a disaster - like breaking a piece of galvanized plumbing and discovering that the only shut off for the house was two floors down in the basement....

I have learned primarily from books and the internet (great sites like this one). Most things I read, research - and then go for it - figuring if I screw it up really badly I can always hire somebody who knows what they are doing to straighten it out...

A good friend of mine used to work for a restoration franchise.
I got help from him on a few cleanup projects. Other than that Google tells me a thing or two.

Trial and Error, mostly common sense! I figured the worst that can happen is that I will need to call a Pro in to fix it. and I am prepared to do that. It only happened once. I do know my limitations tho. It is fun to figure out how to put
something together so that it will work and be right.
