What is this? Pics of pipe insulation.




I don't really care - this eight inch section met with a quiet burial , but I'm curious. It was secured to the galvanized pipes with a copper strap. The plumbing was installed in the 1940s.

looks like burlap, cotton and horse hair .... circa 1940's pipe most likely would have been lead

The pipes are/were brass and galvanized. I have a historical survey of the home that says the plumbing was done in the 1940s ('a modernization').
