What could this material in attic?

Hello I have this brown material sticking out of my attic latch and was kind of worried it could Brown Asbestos. I know that type was hardly used in the western world in homes ( well from what I read) and was wondering if I am over thinking it could be that material. I have 2 pictures if anyone could take a stab at what material this most likely is. I know you cant be 100% certain it is not asbestos without a lab test but that is the next step most likely.

Thanks for any inputs.

It definitely looks like a brown material, going all around the attic door. Kind of looks like red scotchbrite but brown.

OH NO Time to call the HAZMAT team in. Not looks like rock wool or just plain old every day cob webs and dust.

To me it appears someone put a fibrous material like some cheap padding on the back side of the scuttle cover. I agree that you should climb up and look at it -- and also check out the attic.

Cheers!

--Guessing it's old rock wool--had an attic full, just covered it with a layer of batts going opposite the joists except for the plywood storage plates covered in boxes of priceless junk-

If you're that concerned, put a dust mask on and open the hatch up to see what it is. Even if it is asbestos, it won't kill you from touching it. The problem is inhaling it after it goes airborne such as from grinding/cutting.

Have you never been in your attic?

Looks like a felt weatherstripping material to me. Not likely to be asbestos.
