What is this?

Hi folks, I'm new to this forum, and buying our first home. We have an upstairs bonus room that the previous owners did some "work" to. It appears that in one wall they installed a particle board box about 14"x12"x6", with a wood frame on the outside. Lower down the wall there is about a 1'x3' cut in the drywall where something might have gone, but now it's just a hole. BTW, the lower opening is bright because of the flash, but it's really all dark inside.

There appears to be speaker wire hanging in the top box, but I have no idea what might have gone below. Any ideas? Thanks for playing.

They are structures that held the property of the previous owner. You mentioned speaker wire, so probably audio equipment.
