well water turned filter a strange color

1 Attachment(s)
this is a photo of 2 whole-house water filters that filter my well water.

the one on the left is from last month, and all previous filters have looked this way after being removed.

the one on the right was just removed yesterday.

any idea what could be causing this color? (by the way, my water has always been clear; it's only the filter that has turned brown.)

My filters always get brown... that's how I know when to change them! I had my water tested, and besides being moderately hard it has a little iron in it. Not too much, though-- most of the brown is silt. It's an ancient shallow dug well, and the 60 PSI jet pump sucks in a lot of silt when the ground is disturbed (like when my neighbor had a gas line hooked up) or it rains heavily. So it could be clay, silt, or iron.

I just found out that an accumulation of leaves can cause this. Rainwater will flush the tannins out of them and into your well, if it is shallow.

Has it been dry in your area this summer? could be a drop in the water table has changed the way the water flows/enters the well bringing more dirt in.

All of the above too.

Leaves, tree roots and such also

We have a 100ft well and it is a part time camp. Sometimes the water is clear, no filter. Sometimes slight brown color.

We drink it most of the time, no problems.

Any earth quakes latly?
Mine also looks like that every time I change it every few months. We had a 5.6 earth quake one day and it was slam full of silt over night.
