The water softner worked fine untill the by-pass was used to to some well work. Releasing the by-pass seams like the water is working but at the end of the month, no salt pellets were used. What should be checked or how do I fix this?

Ranchody - This doesn't answer your specific question, but here's something you might consider in order to give you some peace of mind. We live in a somewhat remote area with hard water. Without a conditioner/softener our household suffers in the areas of dishwashing and general bathing. We absolutely need something to soften the water we use inside our home.

Several years back I wondered why the softener companies push the "ownership" of household water conditioning products and opted instead to rent instead of buying. We pay approx $15 per month and buy our own salt from wherever we choose. After approx 4 years, our rental unit stopped recharging and consequently stopped using salt. We called the company to complain about the defective unit, and they sent a tech to our home who replaced the defective control unit with a new unit without question. Now we're set until the next problem arises.

There may be an argument regarding which method saves the most dollars in the long run, but we no longer worry about the conditioner unit failing and leaving us without soft water. Granted, we have the monthly obligation to pay.

Hope that helps,
Roger

You didn't mention the type of water softener you have or when you bought it. If it's fairly recent, it probably has a microprocessor controlling the recharge cycle. I assume you turned off the unit when you had it in by-pass. [If not, and if it was left in bypass for a lengthy period, you may have burned out the pump or damaged the impeller.] Your problem may be something as simple as reprogrammming the controller (check your owner's manual.) Absent that, you should be able to manually start the recharge cycle. If so, watch the brine level in the tank during recharge. If the brine level changes your pump is working o.k. If not, check your owners manual to see if there's a priming step required for the pump. Also, check the pump filter (typically a metal screen that traps contaminents from entering the impeller chamber.) It's possible that, while the conditioner was off-line, sediment collected on the filter reducing the pump's efficiency. Good luck!

Old post but will reply:

Not knowing what unit you have leaves me to limited responses, but
1: If some units are left in by-pass while water is being used through out the house, you are pulling in untreated water into the house.
2: If the unit was worked on recently, call the company and mention your problem. They should be there to answer any of your questions and have you on file.( if a suitable company ).

3: Most important , make sure the unit is NOT in the by-pass position!
