Wash machine spinning problems

I have a Maytag Atlantis MAV6451aww. A few days ago I started hearing a tap tap tap tap during the spin cycle every 15 seconds or so. It wouldn't always do it for the whole spin cycle. With lid open and lid switch activated during spin cycle I can see agitator movng back and forth. Sometimes basket will spin, sometimes not. If I hold agitator when basket isn't spinning, it will cause basket to spin but will stop shortly after I let go. When the basket does actually spin on its own like it should, seems to get up to speed like it should. From some things I've read I'm thinking maybe clutch? With machine off,I can turn agitator freely by hand one way, but not the other. If turns freely both ways I understand dogs would need replacing. But if only spins freely one way, I'm guessing dogs are fine. Just wondering where I should start looking and of anyone has experienced these symptoms. Thank you!
