Want to build something with sea shells - coffee table?
Have a couple bags of shells from our summer vacation that I'd like to incorporate into a xmas gift for my wife.

I was thinking maybe a coffee table for our basement. Or maybe an outdoor/sunporch table.

I could use the shells for the border..

Would I use thinset to attach them to the wood?

Just mulling over some ideas..

Any thoughts?

Thinset would work pretty well provided you had a good enough area on the shell to adhere to. If you are considering putting the table outside, you might think about putting hardiboard under it to deal with any potential moisture.

You might try a table with a recessed top, covered with a plastic or glass top. The recess would hold the shells. Next year you could put in something else.

my grandparents had this shells themed table

Glass on top

4 posts for legs [ I think it was pine wood]

A wood net or some sort of bamboo net underside - flattened out and nailed in underside

put the shells on the net - Easy come, easy go....

don't know why I didn't take the table when they went into a home:furious:

I was only 21 at the time.

The memory table is a great idea. It is like a shadow box with glass cover that can be lifted to replace items when your whimsy changes. It would be a fabulous gift. You can put photos, shells, any memorabilia depending on the depth you make the shadow box part. Vacation memories in a table, Great idea hubby!

Good ideas..Having a glass top over the display would be nice..but, thats also more work/$.
But that might be the best route to go.. The net idea would make it pretty easy.

Maybe this weekend I can get started..

Hardiebacker IS NOT for exterior use.:)

Here's a DIY network "how to" link regarding this.,00.html If you get too hurried to build it, I also saw them at target. Not as nice as a homemade present. I saw another plan that just created the basiccoffee table with the glass top, then just added the a memory drawer- a lined drawer, with prefab drawere slides. Simple!

Small round table she could sit at might be nice or how about framing some photographs with the shells on a large backer board.

saw a Hammered or Man Caves show, and they made a octagon poker table with the top of poured clear polyurethane.they placed hands of cards around it beer coasters inside it,and then sealed it all in with sealer just figure how deep the lip needs to be.

Hey Mr. Biggles did you read the first post? It is a gift for his wife. Does she play poker? Is he gonna arrange the momento vacation shells around the poker cards? The point is beautiful hand made memories of their vacation! Don't get side-tracked Tommy2! You don't have to use my ideas but come on poker table! HMMMMph

Hmmm.. Sorta like when the kids club house project turns into your new tool shed? I'll try to avoid the temptation!

Well..Not sure if Im going to do it now.

More work goes into building a nice piece of furniture than I thought..
Especially when you have no specific plan to use/follow.

I think it would also add up to a few hundred $$ by the time its all said and done.

Might have to save this surprise for another time.

How about you buy a shadow box from Pottery barn or michaels crafts for your shells? That is a little work arranging the shells, or you bag the shells and other momentos likes some vacation pictures and give it to her that way, so she can arrange them how she likes? I, personally, would love a gift that way.
