Hi have a need to understand pros and cons of putting in a video security system. Here are the details
We have a gated community of 60 heavily wooded lots on 600 acre development. Some Aready have weekend homes built on them and one or two have full time residents.
Most of us want to keep down casual visitors and unwanted solicitators. We want to keep the gate closed as much as possible but we have a issue with contractors, mail personel, UPS drivers, FedEx deliveries, you get the idea. Right now we have a very simple number entry keypad that only has a pass or no pass without any storage of attempts or a record of times number used and no way to track who has entered when they entered or when they leave, just an eye to have gate open when a vehicle breaks the beam from the inside.
The board is talking about spending a few hundred dollars or more to upgrade this "system" but I think we need to put in some cameras and just use the gate as a way to stop cars long enough to take a picture of who is entering and leaving and when they do it. The license plate, car type who is driving etc., etc.
I think if we have a couple of small signs letting people know they are being photographed as part of the condition of their access most will think twice if they don't really need to get in. Few "No Trespassing" signs might be nice!
Now, how good are the video systems and how much? I see ads for 500 - 700 dollars systems that have a few cameras and do some storage but what does a good system cost and do and what does everyone here think we need?
