Venetian dock markers

do any of you have an idea how I could construct the striped (almost like barber poles) poles you see on the Grand Canal in Venice(I have only seen photos) They will be in salt water and set in concrete in sand. I was thinking painted PVC pipe- 4" in diameter, slipped over rebar cemented in the river bed. Does this sound right. Again I am the designer and use minimum wage employees at my direction. Can't do it myself, not strong enough, don't know how to use very many power tools.

What is your location? Do these poles need to withstand frozen conditions?

We are on the east coast of south florida, palm beach county

Something like these right?

BTW they are usually referred to as Venetian mooring poles.

Andy.

You mean these?

See a video of installation here.... http://youtu.be/Gus7VSFckjw

I think these are all just ordinary painted wooden pilings.

Those are just wooden piers. You would have to get someone with a pile driver or a mud pump to set the poles then just paint them. You could also buy PVC pipe, paint them and just slide them over the wooden poles.

If you use PVC, prime with Rustoleum plastic primer first. It comes in both rattle cans and liquid. Then follow with a 100 percent acrylic exterior paint. Painter's tape should work for the striping.

As for the finials, you might not get the exact match but a lumber yard or---argghh, ick---box store may have something for fence posts that is close. You should see what size those are before getting your round stock.

I think a much simpler way to stripe them would be to use heavy duty vinyl tape for the stripes. The PVC is already white for the background and the tape can be purchased up to 4" wide. It would probably also hold up better than paint.

Great idea!:thumbsup:Still have to deal with the finials but some painter's tape and rattle cans of something like Krylon Fusion or the Rustoleum plastic paint will work fine for them.

I think you will find that tape holds up very poorly out in Florida sunlight... VERY poorly.
