Value of Barn Wood
I have an old barn that I am considering tearing down and know the wood has value. The exterior of the barn is in very good shape plus there is a fair amount of rough cut lumber inside the loft. What is the best way to assess the value of the wood in the barn so I can get a fair price for the wood?

Out here in Cali and Scarizona, hardwood floors made from recycled/reclaimed New England barn lumber command ridiculous prices. Of course age, species, and condition play a big part, but just Google "recycled barn lumber" and see for yourself. There are quite a few outfits specializing in purchasing and re-milling the lumber so getting a ballpark value for what they would pay you for the raw material should be pretty straight forward.

The best way to asses the value is to contact a few mills that specialize in this and ask them
The value will vary by region, mill, and demand for the specific quality and type of wood

It's important to keep in mind that for your lumber you will not get close to what the mills would "retail" the finished product for, so don't use those (finished) prices as guides, you're just providing the raw material

If any of the lumber is American chestnut I would be interested in purchasing it all.
