To update or not to update

I've been considering installing a light in a vintage curio cabinet. Any suggestions about the best way and kind to install? Also, should I even consider updating a vintage piece of furniture?

It would help if you posted a picture. The way the cabinet is constructed would dictate the best way to add lighting while minimizing the visual impact of the fixture. Sometimes you can add lighting with a very small hole for the wiring, using a puck light that blends in with the color of the piece or it sits in a recess on top of the unit.
