Tips on choosing a contractor?

I posted the thread about Angie's list drama. One thing I am learning is that a lot of solid contractors want absolutely nothing to do with it and are happy to settle for word of mouth business. And even though there are some solid contractors on there, many of them view it as a double edged sword. The reason is when they come across an unreasonable customer who wants to blame them for things that are not their fault, they still have to kiss that person's butt and bend over backward for them. Otherwise they get that Angie's List black mark that follows them around forever.

Everybody has to know at least once friend, friend of a friend, family member, friend of a family member, or co worker who got a bathroom or kitchen re done and was happy about it.

Tips on choosing a contractor?

recently I saw roofers do a neighbors reroof. Looked like a good job to me. I wrote down the name on the trucks, then asked around and got high recommendations on them.

On my new AC I called an electrician that I'd used and asked him what AC companies were good. Later I was especially happy to hear great things from others about the company I used.

Worked for years for a roofing/siding/window/door/gutter supplier-
installer.
They didn't advertise -
All reputation/word of mouth.
