tiling inside a fireplace

Hi

I am 3 years into renovation job and slowly losing my mind. I have purchased a wood burner and slate for my hearth. The firebox has been plastered and I am wondering if i can tile inside it and if so with regular tiles?
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you. I guess i will have to paint it( that takes less time which is a small blessing

Is the firebox still in use? I haven't seen one plastered before, or tiled, unless they've been rendered unusable.

If it will be exposed to heat from the woodburning stove unit, paint may not be such a good idea.
