Tiling on industrial steel

How can you tile on industrial steel? I had a contractor place an opening in my fireplace. He had to frame the opening with industrial steel. Not pretty!! He said you can not paint or tile this material. Is this true? What can I use to tile or paint on this material(industrial steel)?

Ok, what I have seen used was roof decking either laid on top of the steel beam or flush with the steel beam by means of welding steel angles underneath to hold up the decking and then pour about 4Ē of concrete into the decking to make a sub-floor and then lay tile on to it. But because this is your fire place there might be a different installation process.
