Tile glue

I pulled up some old tiles in the basement. They were glued down with a tar like adheasive. I tried a couple different cleaners to clean it up with no success. I was wanting to stain or paint the floor. Any suggestions on cleaners or a process to get it up??
Thanks

That is called 'cut back'---I doubt if you can ever get that clean enough for paint or concrete stain---

Let's see what the experts say---Mike---

Worst mess I ever tried to get off a floor. I never can get it completely clean, even using Lacquer Thinner.

Ceramic tile can be installed over the cut back---Just a thought---

Do be careful if you try solvents---I saw a fellow that had burned himself up pretty good when the solvent fumes reached the pilot on the water heater---He looked like a mummy for a couple of weeks--

Thanks all. Figures! just my luck this was under the tile. I'm getting used to it, this happens to me all the time  Thought about ceramic but i have done quiet a bit of it in the basement already. Yes, I had thought about the fumes also, I was trying some "green" cleaners that were not working. Think I am going to go a different direction with the floor. What about something like this?

I'm going to leave that for one of the vinyl experts like Rusty Baker---I don't know if a peal and stick will stick to the old cut back----Mike---

I doubt that would stick to the floor. Why not some loose-lay sheet vinyl? Flexitec makes one that has a realistic wood pattern.
