Studs / mullion in between door and sidelights

When I originally spec'd out a door it was a 6' french door with 24" sidelights on each side of it. It was going to be shipped in 3 pieces and then mulled together in a single opening. Due to a couple of issues, it would be much better if I could put these in 3 separate openings, will 3.5" mullion between the door and each sidelight. My question is, is this going to look weird? I don't see any installations like this so I can't really grasp how it's going to look.

The way I figure, it's going to mean around 5" of gap in between the door and the sidelight (3.5" for the mullion, about .75" lost to the opening, and about .75" due to whatever I trim it with). Any opinions on how this would look? Thanks!

It will look kind of industrial and might look out of proportion. Could you explain the design change? If it is structural perhaps someone here could offer a solution.

Yea it's structural. Our engineer came back and said we need a w6x25 beam. But there are issues furring out our 2x4 walls to 6" on on one side so I wanted to try to get us down to a 5" or even a 4" beam. hence the studs between the door and sidelights.
