Is this structural or can I rip it down?

The purple overhang piece, it appears it's just there for the lights? We think it's ugly and want it gone (along with a bung of other things in this kitchen:whistling2: ) so I'm thinking of just taking it down.

You can take it down but how do you plan on lighting up that area once it's gone?
That purple paint is sure not helping to blend it in and not make it stick out.

The one on the left is sagging a little too. Maybe move the pots into the ceiling instead?

This may be way more work that you think. The wiring for the lights probably runs through the soffitt. And there's possibly not enough room in that ceiling for pot lights. If it were me, I'd correct the sagging and paint the soffit to match the walls.

I'll try that first, maybe it's the purple that is making me nauseous. :jester:

Besides wiring, there may be pipes in that soffit. You can pull the can lights
out and look in there (using a mirror if necessary) to see what's up.

Ding Ding Ding!
Yep, cut a couple inspection holes first to see what's in there.
