strike plate
the door latches are hitting the 1x4 door casings before they hit the striker plate. any way to fix this except a larger/longer strike plate.

Are the bolts nested into the door edge as they should be or are they creeping outward a little like so many do?

Strike plates aren't designed for a 1x4 casing. If you want to eliminate the abuse on the 1x4 edge, get an extended plate.
