Strange turnkey sticking out of floor. Can anyone identify?

Greetings everyone! First time poster here.
Recently I needed to move an extremely large piece of furniture to prepare for our new baby girl. I've lived in this house for about 7years now, which is a split level made in 1959.
Behind this piece of furniture I found what looks like some sort of shut off key sticking out of the hardwood floor. Here's a pic.
http://m.flickr.com/#/photos/63438193@N06/6833566144/

I've got no clue what it is. Underneath this room is the garage. There is no visible pipe or anything I can see from underneath where it is. Also, if you look at the molding you can see a round dent where someone had obviously used a device to turn whatever this is.
This poses a danger to a baby so I need to remove it, unless it's important.
Can anyone help identify what this might be?

The link to your pic did not work.

Are you sure it's not a shut off for gas?

It does not look like a shut off valve to me. It looks like some sort of capped off pipe. Without some sort of reference as to what might be found near it I could not even guess. If it MUST be remove then open the ceiling in the garage below and see where it goes.

Does it look something like this?
Or does it really a key?

Its near nothing. If I go into the garage and look up exactly where it lines up theres nothing there. No pipe, nuthin!
Whatever it is must run underneath the hardwood flooring between the joists.

Looks about where there could have been an old steam register.
Only way to find out is to cut out some sheetrock below.

That is my thought as well....it could be making a 90 deg turn and going into the wall which is why you don't see it below.

That looks like a screw driver someone got stuck and pulled the handle off to me. How big is it?

It couldn't be. It just couldn't be.
Now I gotta get a pair of pliers and try to yank on it.

Not a screwdriver. Was a good guess though.
It's definitely attached to something solid like a pipe. It has absolutely no give to it in any direction.
