Strange rotten egg smell while drilling into wood?
This is a real strange one.
While putting up new wood furring strips in the ceiling of this 40 year old house, as I drill holes and drive screws into the bottom of the trusses I smell rotten eggs.
The house is old, all the sheet rock are old (most of them plastered walls), old trusses from southern yellow pine, very hard.
I have heard of rotten egg smell from Chinese drywalls. None of that in this house.
Old DWV lines have been redone in PVC, all of them capped and sealed, there is no functional toilets or sink or anything inside the house, only one working sink outdoor. So this is not from any sewer or septic.
There is no smell in the room, there is no smell even when I am on the ladder measuring and marking where to put up the furring strips.
But when I started to do the predrilling and driving screws, I smell it.
Strange...
Can old wood release such an odor?
