Stinky trash can

One of the trash cans in my garage has started stinking. It's one of those dark brown Rubbermaid roughnecks. I cleaned out the gunk accumulated at the bottom and squirted it out with the hose, but when I put it back in the garage the next day after it had dried out, the odor returned. Any suggestions on what I might use to do a better job cleaning it?

I'd start with a bleach soak then a stiff brush scrubbing and sunshine to dry

Boil some water, pour into the can, put in a cup of Tide detergent, and start scrubbing. Then turn upside down and let dry. Should smell really clean after that. Of course, also depending on the age of the cans, and if they are out in the weather all the time, the plastic can absorb odors from whatever is put into them.

If you can get the can out of the garage, put it outside, instead of stinking up the garage all of the time.

you need to find a better place to empty the kitty litter....

plastic absorbs odors......

Another oldy but goody is to wipe it out with vanilla essence. Although it stinks initially it does work

I used to sell bugs originally fermented for pig farmers for household applications like this. The bugs formed enzymes that ate organic matter that created stinky stuff. Some of the odor eliminators for pets will likely work. Anti Icky Poo was a fave when I had kitties. Bugs and enzymes will die in the sun though. The stuff is not cheap.

I would try bleach and a strong detergent first. They do make some sort of stuff for plastic cutting boards that might work if the bleach, detergent, bugs and enzymes mentioned do not.

One of those car wash brushes on a hose extension might be handy to have for this so you can really scrub the inside of the can.

Are you using trash bags as liners?
