Stainless Steel Sink is rusting after only 2 months

Its only been 2 months since my brand new sink was installed, and it is already rusting. Granted I live by the ocean so things tend to rust much faster, 2 months seems way too fast. I haven't even used it since I have not moved in yet while construction is going on in other parts of the house.

Amount of rust: I would describe as scattered specks.

I know stainless steel is not 100% rust-PROOF, but I would think it should be more rust resistant than this. Did I get a inferior product?

Then it is not stainless steel, due to Stainless Steel does not rust if it is a true ss material. What may be happening, is a chemical reaction, caused by something that was dumped into the sink. Can you post a picture of the suspect.

There are at least 120 different varieties of "stainless" steel. The only thing they have in common is that they are all steel, meaning they have approximately 6 percent carbon by weight, and they all contain chromium, I believe the minimum is 6 percent by weight (the stainless part). Beyond that, some stainless contains nickel, others have cadmium, tungsten, beryllium ....

You get the picture. Most stainless is not resistant to staining in a salt environment, you need special stainless steel for that application. There are special mixtures designed for sinks, usually containing high percentages of nickel, which makes them more rust resistant. Generally you can check the makeup of the steel on the manufacturer's website, but if you got an off brand sink, that may not be possible. I would check with the installer to see the exact model and metallurgical characteristics, or if you did the install yourself, check with your supplier. High end stainless is quite expensive, you pay for that nickel and chromium.

Try cleaning with bar keepers friend, and a green scratchpad.

Are you sure that there wasn't any filings from something being sawn are drilled over sink and that this is only the footprint of that work. I had the same thing happen to me after installing metal roof an was PO'ed until I realized it was from the nibblers the contractor had used.

I used to work at a fab shop where we had a lot of SS pipe and ducts. That certainly looks like secondary exterior contamination of the SS

Same here looks like filings are something. Never seen ss do anything other than tarnish.

You should be able to maintain this sink with a cleaning routine involving Brillo or a Brillo like product.

Stainless Steel Sink is rusting after only 2 months

I know this may sound a bit ugly, but it's the truth: I worked at two different plants for one company. There were Stainless Steel partitions between the toilets in both restroom facilities and SS partitions between the urinals in the men's rooms. I saw this very type of discoloration on the partitions in the men's rooms between the urinals and we all know what caused that. Cleaning with a mildly abrasive cleaner and a fine scotch pad kept these partitions looking new.

Thurman, the reason you saw discoloration in the mens room between the urinals, is due to the salts in urine that gets splashed.

Do not clean with steel wool as it will leave small particles imbedded in the surface further enhancing your problem. Scotch Brite pad is best moving it with the grain of the finish.
