Spray Insulation Questions

Hey everyone, I have a few general questions about spray foaming a basement.
My mother in law wants to turn her basement into a bit of a living area.

Her father had (very poorly) framed in some walls and hung some paneling 15 years ago but it was never insulated and no vapour barrier put up. The basement is a stone foundation and there has been some moisture problems.

I have started pulling down the old paneling and framework, and we've made some progress in cleaning all the cobwebs and dust and mice nests out of the walls and spaces above the foundation.

Ok now on to the questions.

1. Should we frame the walls up before we get the guys to spray?

2. Do we need to put up any kind of vapor barrier between the stone and framing or anywhere?

3. Any general tips for doing something like this?

Any advice is welcomed.

Thanks

AA

The moisture problem should be fixed before you close in the walls.
Frame the basement and then spray.
You need to mention where the house is. The need for vapor barriers is a regional thing.

If the basement is below grade, you generally should not install a vapor barrier, as any moisture that gets into the wall is trapped, where is will become a problem. You should air seal, however, and Certainteed's Membrain should work well for that (spendy). You could also use the Airtight Drywall Approach.

Spray Insulation Questions

  • Should we frame the walls up before we get the guys to spray?---- no, much easier the spray the stones and get a uniform coating without framing in the way. Build the wood wall using p.t. bottom plate on a poly sill sealer for a capillary/thermal/air break.

    2. Do we need to put up any kind of vapor barrier between the stone and framing or anywhere?----- some Provinces require it, check locally. BSC doesn't recommend any;
Nor does your Code- Fig.2.10 here; http://www.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca/eng/ibp/ir...199/part2.html

3. Any general tips for doing something like this?------
Have them spray the rims; http://www.buildingscience.com/docum...-at-rim-joist/
