Some crazy mud / plaster stuff on my walls in the new house

So here is a crappy cell phone camera picture of some of the walls in my new house. I would like to take this silly stuff off because it looks god awful, but have no clue where to start. I'm hoping that I won't have to pound out the whole wall and put up new sheetrock, but if that is the case then so be it. Ideas?

From the picture, it looks like someone did a texture job with drywall mud and a sponge. I've seen it on plenty of ceilings, just not on that many walls. Anyway, there is no easy way to get rid of it. I would knock off the high points with a scraper and then sand down the remainder to get a smooth surface.

Had a similar problem. I took a 12" drywall knife and knocked off all I could then did a skim coat of drywall compound to smooth the walls. Retextured and painted and it was good as new.
