Is there a way to **START** by making a 2D plan view drawing?

You might try Sweet Home 3D. It is open source and FREE and I like it better than Sketch Up. There are extensive open source symbol sets from the user community as well. Learning curve is fairly short too!

Forgot to mention, you can set it up just they way you like then save as a template and make it the default startup every time you start SU.
