I took a small vanity out of the basement to install a new vanity and sink with a new fauset. Yhe problem I have is the sink I took out worked ok and the one I put in will not drain , The pipe are clean and a new trap, The water stays in the sink after the trap fills up. The only thing I can figure is the old sink had a overflo or vent in the side of the sink and the new sink does not have a hole. Could the sink not be getting the proper venting and the water cannot flow. That is the way the new sink was made, HELP PLEASE Charles

It sounds like there's no vent attached to the drain pipe.
Can you see a vent branch connected to the drain? There should be a Tee at the drain in the wall. The upper branch attaches to the vent which in turn connects to the main waste pipe.
If you're not sure, post some photos.

I looked int the 1 1/2 inch drain pipe elbow in the wall and it cures down towards floor. I put just enough water to fill trap and it will not drain. If I take the drain apart the water flows out the trap and I can pour water into the water pipe in the wall and it drains, I have to figure out how to post pictures. Charles

is it possible that you have your j-bend reversed and the trap is too low, requiring more force to move the water up into the drain pipe?

I realize it's a long shot, but the only thing I can think ofthat might cause this kind of issue since the old sink appearently worked fine
