Shelf on Rock Wall

I have a rock wall floor to ceiling with a fireplace and want to know if it is possible to put a wood or log shelf above the fireplace. Is it possible to cut into the rock/mortar to install the brackets for shelf - does it compromise the rock's stability in any way? Or is it best to not do anything at all?

You should call a contractor before you get into trouble. That's my advice.

Posible, yes. Something a diy'er should try, not so much.

You posted this same question over on the construction forum. You got good advice here and over there.
