Rust from chimney

Had rust stain on shingles coming down from chimney to gutter for years. Finally had replaced with faux brick veneer and new flashing. But rust has returned. Anyone know what's causing this? I've heard that there are some acids that work well on rust but I need to fix this. Please help, thanks.

Probably have some old galvanized flashing under the shingles that's past its life.

Who flashed it? Unless this was repair 20+ years ago someone left some of the old flashing in place. It needs to go or the rust going to just come back.

A "professional" chimney guy flashed it last year, and allegedly removed the old. So you're saying its possible to leave some of the old and just go over the top of it?

rust = ferrous steel
Chimney flashing is either aluminum or copper

That was certainly the case on my roof. Everything put up there since it was first built was still there. Had two complete sets of galvanized flashing in there.
