rolled insulation in attic

Hello all!
I am looking to roll insulation in my attic. I have been looking around for pricing information but cannot really find much? The insulation in place now is rather beat up and haggard, likely the age of the house (50 years).
Reason why I am looking to do this is b/c our heating bills are a bit more than they should be for a smallish ranch house, and I am looking to fix this.
So the question: Can I do this on my own, as a rather unexperienced person? And what should I expect to spend per sq ft?

How thick of an insulation do you need?
Do you want rolled or cellulose insualtion?
The R-13 rolled is around $.22 per square foot and the R-30 rolled is around $.54 sqyare foot. Your area may have higher or lower prices depending on the market. The loose cellulose is a round $5 per bag and the coverage varies with the thickness that it is spread. Cellulose is cheaper and may be easier for you to install.

The attic space is the best place to start to lower your heat bills and A/C bills with added insulation.

Do you have access to your attic?
Are the joists spaced 16" on center or are they spaced 24" on center?

You should be able to do this yourself. And what should I expect to spend per sq ft?

Price per square foot depends on the final thickness that you want to acheive.

What state are you in?

Some states require that an R-38 is acceptable and other colder states require that an R-49 is needed in the attic.
