rochester carburetors

hey everyone hope u are enjoying your day.

ok i got a problem with my car. it is an 81 malibu and the car is a pig for money. the car has a towing performance cam in it and new rocker arms n well the top half of the moter is new. it also has a new fule pump. this car is on its 3rd carburetor. the car has a flat spot. when pressing the gas lightly and slowly bringing up the RPM's then it is fine. but when stomping down on the gas in stals. My dad thinks it may be rust in the gas tank. this means i have to drain the tank that is 3/4 full and and check for rust n drop the tank...then redoing the entire gas line . if there is rust then that means i need to by a new gas tank and a nother carb. The rust in the tank if their is rust may have cloged onbe of the jets on the carb. The second idea that we have come up with is that the carb is sucking air around the seal. should their be anything on the gasket to help prevent this. would sucking air make it have a flat spot?

throwing this car out isnt an option because as u can see i have had many hours in to this car.

...or your accelerator pump is bad/leaking

the motor is a 229.

and accelerator pump? where is that at?

is it possible that their is an air leak? or rust in the tank?

I would be looking at the accel pump or go back and check all of the settings for the linkages. Another kit isn't all that much, or at least didn't used to be. If it is idleing smooth then I wouldn't think that it would be sucking air around the gaskets, but you could take WD40 and spray around it and see if it helps when you try accelerating. Also check the vac lines. Might also pop the dist cap and make sure that the advance weights aren't wore out on their pivot pins

Yes, a vacuum leak, it's possible
Yes, gunk clogging the fuel lines, it's possible
Either one could cause drivability problems

From what you are describing, a flat spot on acceleration, first I'd check the accelerator pump
That's more likely

Yours may be adjustable, I don't know

I remember those years well. I had a 82 van that had the hesitation problem. Most GM products did back then. Went though warranty repairs until the warranty was over. Then I changed the manifold and carb to a edelbrock and holly. Problem gone. Ran like a champ. Those years Rochester's were crap. It was when the gas mileage restrictions started.

thanks... thats the same thing my dad said and i am plaining on going to a holly an also a new gas line and maybe a tank too.
