riddle me this: painting ceramic tile?

I've discovered that it will cost a billion dollars to remove the old tile on my kitchen walls. Contractors tell me this old house () has it's tile cemented in place. Well I guess that's how they did it back in '32. But I can't afford the labor to take it out, and I don't have the skill nor the inclination to try to do it myself. Instead, I'm thinking of painting the tile. Does anyone here have some helpful tips and first-hand experience at painting ceramic tile? One contractor told me to find someone older to do it, not a young person. He was pressing the point about experience. Well that scared me. I can google the process, but actual hands-on seems better. Help!

It CAN be done but is not necessarily recommended as it does not hold up well and should not be attempted in a wet area.
Clean, clean, clean( very important)
I would use TSP and rinse well( also, very important)
Apply a BONDING primer( Zinsser's 123, BM Fresh Start,etc.
Finish with a QUALITY semi gloss 100% acrylic
This means you do NOT buy your paint and or primer @ Home Depot or Lowe's

thanks Chris, for the feedback. But where do I buy the items you speak of? Also, do I have to sand the tile as a prep step?

riddle me this: painting ceramic tile?

"Flyby", there is a business in our town, and I'm sure there are others, that do this--change the color of ceramic tile in baths and kitchens. I have seen their work and it's nice. The offer a full, unconditional, five year warranty against the material coming off. They did my cousins (the older female cousin) bath which had tiled walls, floors, and they even did the bath tub. I don't know why she had the tub done, I thought the "Rose" color was just right ~. Less than five years now and no peeling, hopefully it will last. The only colored the tile, not the grout lines, but they did "bleach out", or something, the grout lines and colored them a soft contrasting color which looks great. IF your tile is in good condition, ask around, check the yellow pages, and seek pricing. David

Thank you Dave for the advice. That business you mention sounds as if it's a specialist outfit. I know of "glazers" here, but I'll research coloring tilr here locally. I wonder what htat process is like?
thanks again,
