Replacing old steel basement windows in a poured foundation?
I have four steel basement windows that are about 35 years old in a house that I just purchased. I would like to replace them because they are either rotted through or have real bad rust and / or both. I'm pretty sure that I can pull out the old window and cut out the old steel frame but what I'm not sure of is can these be relaced, any suggestions on brands?
Any home center will have replacements. Vinyl and glass block are usually two types in stock. Just make sure you check your size against what's available before you yank them out. If the frames are weak you can probably just pry them out with a decent pry bar. Start at the interior bottom and pry the center up then the top down and work your way around them.
You may have to frame the opening down (PT lumber) to get the correct fit for an "in stock" window. Or you can get them special ordered to fit your opening, which will take a couple of weeks and cost more.
