Replacing gas fireplace

I'm looking into buying a vent-free gas fireplace insert. I have a vented now and it stinks, the heat just goes byby..
so i'm looking for a good 18" to 24" set, i have a remote control too. About how many BTU's would heat 1000 sq ft? I have oil heat and I'm trying to save some money while I"m online and watching TV, so i dont have to heat the whole house while i sit here...
And if anyone knows a good place online to get one or has one and can recommend it. please do so..
thanks

I'm not a big fan of vent free. Make sure you install some CO detectors if you go this route, actually you should have these already if you have gas appliances.
Have you considered a direct vent with circulating fan? Depending on your house, you should be able to suppliment your heat with 20-30 btus sq/ft output.

Does anyone know if you haveto clean out the chimney. it hasn't been used as a regular fireplace for like 8 years, before installing a vent-free unit?>
thanks
