Replacing facia boards

I live in Mass right next to the ocean and a few facia boards are rotting. I also have wooden gutters on the house. What is the best way to replace these. And what type of wood should I use. They are 3 stories up and I haven't been up to measure them yet. I can get pics in the morning.
Are wooden gutters ok or should I tare them down and replace with aluminum gutters?

Redwood or cedar would be my choices for something you don't want to replace often. Paint all sides before installing. Pressure treated wood tends to check and warp, so while very rot resistant, often don't look good.

we have to cut back the roof shingles, sheating & rafter ends due to dry rot. What is the easiest way to cut the roof shingles? Can it be done without removing the roof shingles?

Don't cut the shingles, remove them in one piece if you can. I use a slate puller to go under the shingle and pull the nail out.
If you do it carefully, you can pull them out and put them back.

Thanks for the suggestion. We do have to do the entire house all the way around. How would you nail the shingles back on with the rest of the shingles in place? What is a slate puller?

Do a google for the slate puller for a picture, but it's basically a flat bar with hooks on the end to grab nails on a slate roof. You can use it on a shingle roof.
If you do the roof on a warm day the shingles will be very pliable. The only issue you will have is the last row you put on where you need to lift up the shingles left in place.
