Removal of screw in stripped hole on door
Hello,
I am trying to repair my exterior wooden front door where currently the bottom rubs on the threshold and without the extra boost from the threshold misses the latch hole for the bolt on the mortise lock. One problem I'm currently having is that on the bottom hinge the two top holes going into the door (not the jamb) are currently stripped. I'd like to repair the stripped hole but I cannot even back the screws out to repair the holes. I know how to remove a screw with a stripped head and I know how to repair the hole once it's stripped but I cannot seem to get the screws out. Has anyone else dealt with this? Suggestions? Thanks! |

Try using a sharp angled chisel or screwdriver. Tap it with a hammer behind the head to bring it out. Maybe can grab it with some end nippers. Or drill it out and repair the hole.
If the screw head is extremely flush then drilling it out is probably the best option. Don't damage the hinge.

You may need a screw extractor. Craftsman still makes a good set. Real hardware store should have decent ones

Sorry. Misunderstood. Sounds like drilling it out may may your only hope if you cannot get a hold of it.

Try to get a small pry or nail puller underneath the head. If you can get that to engage the threads you can then back the screw out with a screwdriver.

Would injecting something like epoxy or Gorilla glue so the threads had something new to bite work you think? Or just make the problem worse? I have found the syringes for inkjet cartridges handy for injecting into tight spaces.

remove hinge from jam then remove non stripped screws then slightly pull or pry out hinge as you back out stripped screws alternating back in forth till heads are out far enough to use visegrips
