Recommendations for best DIY books to buy?
I'm shopping for books that will help us to better understand and fix many aspects of our house.

Books on wiring, plumbing, carpentry basics, installing things, etc.

Reader's Digest Complete Do-It-Yourself Manual?
(various topics) for Dummies?

Recommendations requested! :)

I have the Reader's Digest "New Fix-it-Yourself manual" (1996) and the Readers Digest "Home Improvements Manual" (1982) and they are both great resources for general knowledge, but they don't go into great detail for any one thing (not to mention they are starting to get seriously outdated!). To get the best info on a particular subject, find a specialized source. Creative Homeowner and Sunset make some fairly decent How-to books that you can find on the shelves at Lowes, and you can find a variety of subjects. The "Idea Books" from Taunton are trash unless you like a bunch of pretty pictures of houses you'll never be able to afford.

Home depot has a big book of Home Improvement. It would probably give you a fair baseline understanding of your home's structure and systems, and how to do some DIY stuff.

I've found Taunton's topic-specific guides are an excellent series. I bought a couple of them on trimwork and cabinets for good reading material a couple years back, and even though I know how to do all the stuff in them, I go to them from time to time for ideas.

I had to go check the date, 1980, just a tad outdated, but I had gotten a series from Time-Life. I think books that cover individual topics are the best, more in depth. Now a days, to me it unbelievable how much info you can get on the internet. Easy access to so much information. And of course, a site like this one offers so much help. For me, my mrs watches those home and garden shows, gets ideas and I come on here to find out how to get it done. good luck on your projects.

Save yourself some money and find the website of your local library.
Do a search under keywords Tauton, Black and Decker, Creative Press
or the specific area you want information on (ex bathrooms, tile)
The website will list the books that are available. Have the books send to a local library close to where you live for pickup.
