Question on Storm Door lock latch

I was removing my storm door to do some renewal painting of it. I did a stupid thing during the process of removing the decors and the latch. As I removed the 2 screws, the inners of the latch fell on the floor and now am at a loss of how to use the spring witch tapers ...its not broken, otherwise I will buy a replacement..just need to know the right way to install that spring..or does it matter?

Very likely, the small end of the spring goes over a nub of some sort, to hold it in place, and you may need to turn it in order to walk it in place. If that doesn't fit, you may want to provide some more details, at least the brand of door, and a picture may certainly help.

I'd gladly provide a picture, but don't know how to do it here. I did a search and couldn't find explanation on how to do this. Some forums have different ways of doing this. Of course now I have to wait for the red devil black paint to dry, after repainting them. Its enamel and is taking so long to dry..its sticky when I test it with my finger, after applying almost 3 hours ago. Anyone know a quick way to dry it? LOL

It only fits one way. In other words, large side goes against the door skin.
