Question on garage addition; not on building but design/layout

Hi all,
I'm looking for ideas on adding a detached garage, or adding onto our existing attached garage. What type of a consultant would I want to discuss this with, a standard home architect? We've got a 1 acre lot, but where our house and the neighboring house are situated, it doesn't leave a lot of good options.
Any suggestions on who to talk to, or actual suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Eric

If this is still to be used as a garage, you should only need to find a general contractor. If it will be turned into living space, an architect would be my choice.

I think an architect is expensive overkill for a garage, especially detached.
It may be an option if there is a concern about tying into the main house and getting the asthetics right. But even then, in most cases a competent GC will be able to carry the style of the house over to the garage.

Realy depends on where you are. In the some areas I can draw you a picture on a napkin for your approval and build it without any plans, but here in the Tampa it would all have to be drawn stamped and sealed. Check and see what you will need if you need plans start with the person who will draw them, that could be an architect, draftsman, or the GC depends on the area.
