question about cleaning a boiler room

Hello: I am new to this site and I hope someone out there can help me. I live in a Greek Revival Style house that was built in 1936. We have an enclosed "old back porch" that has a small room with an old "steam boiler." The house once was heated by radiator heat that we discontinued and installed central heat and air. This boiler started out as coal and was converted to oil at some point. The room is made of brick and covered in soot. It is a pretty decent sized "room" that I could use for additional storage without removing the boiler. My question: I am wondering if it would be possible to clean this room and how to go about doing it? Is that something I could do by washing down and use a shop vac? Or is that considered an environmental hazard that would be a legal problem? I am also interested in finding out if anyone else has ever done anything like that? Thanks

question about cleaning a boiler room

This almost sounds like a job for a chimney cleaner. The regulations will vary depending on your location. Regardless of the regulations, if you do try to clean it up make sure you wear protective mask and ensure good ventilation.
