Pull chain outside, goes in the ground?

I have attached two pics. As I was cleaning up some plants yesterday, I stumbled on this little cable, with a "handle" on it, that goes into the ground. Where it goes in has been widened up to about 3/4 inch, implying that maybe it has been used. We moved in about six months ago, and didn't pay much attention to the outside during the winter.

Just in front of where this cable goes, is a wall downstairs, and directly inside is a drain, where he had a very large bathtub. The location of the drain made me wonder, since the septic tank is a good 30 feet away, and I am not sure the down slope is enough for the drain to reach there. I wonder if it's not some sort of a pull to open a pipe to go to a drywell or some other means of emptying the tub, rather than letting it go into the tank. The tub looked like an 8 or 10 person seater, it was huge.

My obvious solution is to dig up around the cable, but it's raining today (thank goodness, we need it bad). So if you have ever seen something similar, I'd like to know!

In the 2nd pic I put a sheet of paper around the cable so it's much easier to see.

Thank you!

Going to have to dig it up. I can think of nothing normal it would have done. Looks like some sort of DIY thing.

Don't pull on that. The house must be built on the toilet of one of our ancient ancestors, who were 100 times our size. If you pull it, it will flush.

Dug down two feet last night, still didn't find what it attaches to. Ran out of time as we were late to be somewhere else. Plan to dig it up this weekend!

Dug it up in the rain, lol! Went straight down for 3 feet, then to a connection, which had broken off from ANOTHER cable. This one pulled right up with no effort and had nothing on the end of it. So I guess, it was just a lot of nothing....
