proper size hinge


i am hanging a solid wood extior door what size hinge shoud be used 4 or 41/2 ?

proper size hinge


Some may disagree with me, but you can use either one. More importantly choose quality hinges with bearings in the leafs.

Use 3 of either size and as Armchair said, use a good quality product.

proper size hinge


A old timer taught me if door is solid-core under 7' use 3- 4" ballbearing hinges, 7' & over 3- 4 1/2" ballbearing hinges. Dosent mean he was right or wrong but I have done it that way for the last 35 yrs. and have seen alot of doors hung this way. But I also agree with the other two guys either will work as long as they are quality ball bearing hinges.

proper size hinge


When in doubt, check the manufacturer's specs on the hinges. They normally have weight ratings and door sizes.
