Professionals, opinions on Angie's List?


I like to do my ow groudwork. as metioned above, asking at a paint store for painters is a good idea, when we were looking for roofing to be done, we went to the supply house and dropped some of the company names to them and got some good advice. when I needed a new toilet, we went to a kohler showroom and asked them for referral. I have had good luck doing it this way.

Professionals, opinions on Angie's List?


I ran a successful flooring installation business for 38 years. It was all done on referral. If you need to advertise on Angie's list, you are either not too good or don't realize that it's a waste of money.

Professionals, opinions on Angie's List?


I have not researched Angie's List but my question is where does their authority come from? Are they experienced in the fields they are recommending enough to recognize good contractors, or even legitimate complaints? I know and have dealt with building inspectors that could not pass a contractors test. The best references I ever get is from the suppliers that sell to them.

They recommend those that pay for it.

I would add to one of those posts above:

Need a concrete contractor? Ask a mixer driver. If you ask sales or dispatch at the concrete company, they'll probably refer you to whomever buys the most concrete from them. A mixer driver doesn't care about that. They'll tell you who adds 100 gallons of water to the load, who does their site prep the best, who is the most professional to deal with (because if they're ***holes to us, they'll lie right to your face about other things), and whose work will turn out the best. We probably won't know much about price, but that's the least of your concerns if you're trying for quality work.

Angie's List started out okay. Really good, as a matter of fact.

But now it's more or less like The Better Business Bureau - which is actually almost worse than worthless. People are led to believe that services/companies are "rated," when really, if they pay their fees they get a good review/rating.

I registered my business this winter with AL, only because I already had two reviews, but there's no way I would pay for it. Unfortunately, they bombard you every way possible to try to meet with you and "upsell" your membership. I know a few people who have had decent luck with the free listing of AL, but you really need to get your customers to write reviews on it to get noticed. I refuse to ever pay them a dime though, as it seems fraudulent to me, considering they advertise how teh contractor "CAN'T" pay to be a member, which is what I'm sure Ron was linking to............
