problems with tiles

I hired a relative to install tiles on the living room last May 05, and already I had to remove over 200 tiles. I'm presently removing and installing more. The real problem is that over an inch of thinset was used to level the floor and since water has sipped through, the grout is cracking and the tiles are coming out. Instead of thinset, can I use portland cement. Also, what is a good grout and sealer to use that can prevent the water from passing through. Help, I'm doing this job myself now.

How thick is your sub floor?
If the sub floor is too thin than that would allow the tiles to flex and move.

1. Why was 1" of thinset used? 2. What is under the thinset?

This is a recent new 3 fam house constructed with cement floors (cement Planks).

Thinset cannot and should not be used as a leveler.

I like to know if it is advisable to use purple sheetrock in shower or tub area instead of cement board.

This should probably in another thread of it's own, but wether you use water resistent sheetrock or cement board, you still need to water prrof the surface before putting on tiles in a shower enclosure. Redgard or Schluter makes products for waterproofing shower enclosures.
