Preparing to lay a ceramic floor

I'm preparing to lay a ceramic tile floor on an existing concrete floor. The tutorial I'm watching says you need to install concrete backerboard before installing a ceramic tile floor. Do I need to do this if the existing floor is level concrete?

Thanks for your help.

No - lay directly on the concrete. You need to check the level of the concrete - really check, as in get a long straight edge (~6-8') and move it around the floor looking for low and high areas.

I recently did my kitchen and the level looking concrete had a good area with 1/4" variences in a few feet. Fixed it with leveling compound. Then the 20x20 tiles went down and look great.
