Porcelain tile installation questions

I'm thinking about putting tile walls in one of my bathrooms. I have a few questions about it.

Can you install that stuff over a painted wall? Or would I need to remove the paint?

Also how do you install it over a power outlet or light switch? Would I have to cut the hole out and just screw the cover in over it? That's the only way I can think of to do it.

Thanks for any help

You can install tile over a painted surface. If it's a glossy finish, I'd lightly sand the paint to rough it up a bit.
Cut the tile the size of the box so the plate covers the edges of the cut tile.

You don't "move the box"...you move the appliance. The ears of switches and outlets must be "over" the tile thereby moving them outward the thickness of the tile. Some states require "box extenders" and some don't.:)

Painted surfaces are known "bond-breakers" when it comes to tile but this usually isn't a major issue if the tile is being applied in a dry area other than a tub surround or shower. Scuff the paint to improve bonding and go for it.

Thinset mortar (unmodified) would be the better choice of adhesives for tiles larger than six inches. Mastic adhesives will never dry under large tiles over painted surfaces.
