A lot of HO's assume they can add layer after layer od comps on a roof, and no big deal. I see this all the time.....a guy can hold a 3 tab, or even an architectural shingle up and say "this hardly weighs anything"...when in reality, a comp roof starts at 300# per square (3# per square foot) and goes up, depending on the shingle. I will say I have rarely seen high definition or 5 year shingles overlaid on existing, probably because the HO's that will spend money for these will pay to have the roof stripped and done right. I have seen roofs with 4 layers of 3 tabs.....on a 30 square roof, and you guys do the math.....that is a hell of a load for a roof to support.

Not pro here.

Personally, I would not put in supports for anything until I had removed all of the previous roofing material. Better to support it after it bounces back than to be holding down in the wrong place.

It takes less time to do a thing right than it does to explain why you did it wrong.
