Permit Issues
 
So how much does this suck? We called the city and designed our addition (this thread) around the offsets that they gave us. Our architect called as well. Drawings were made, money was spent. Contractor found, permits applied for. Suddenly the offsets aren't correct. The information they gave us in the past? Wrong. What a PITA!

So now we have surveyors coming out ASAP and we're hoping to save this project before we lose the contractor (he has other projects lining up and was hoping to do ours first).

My condolences on the your predicament....
Hopefully everything will work out. Worse case scenerio, you could get a new quote from the GC based on what he can finish up to. (Example: Structural framing and getting it 'weather-tight') and have another GC lined up to finish it off to your desires. If you look now, you might be able to have one lined up. We have had to do 1/2 projects like that ourselves...

I don't suppose you got the names of the people you talked to at city hall? It don't much matter now, but it would be nice to call the highest supervisor you can get ahold of and give him/her a piece of your mind.

At this point, it turns out the architect's drawings are a bit out of whack. The measurements aren't correct in relation to the plotline. While he should be willing to fix it for free (his contract garantees permits) it's not really the main issue anymore.

We have apply for a variance ($500) with the city. They say it could take 3-4 months, but I bet it doesn't. The permits were supposed to take at a month and we would have had them in under 2 weeks if it weren't for this mess... oh well, live and learn.



so that's where we stand now. Hopefully we'll get a survey done today (someone offered to come out). if we for sure have those lines written in stone, then we'll just apply for the variance with our existing plans, no changes. I figure, if we're asking them to bend the rules for us, we may as well go all the way and ask them to bend the rules for the house we WANT.
